The Deconstruction & Reuse Network, a California non-profit organization, facilitates "the careful dismantling and reclaiming of a structure's reusable, finished materials and rough lumber." The materials may then be donated to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity for reuse, netting the donor a tax deduction.

Green Building

The California Energy Commision is on the verge of adopting new 2013 standards to require solar-ready roofs, better windows, and whole house fans in new construction. The proposed standard is estimated to be 25% more energy-efficient that the current one.

Building GreenContra Costa County defines Green Building as "a “Whole-Systems” approach for designing and constructing buildings that conserve energy, water, and material resources and are healthier, safer, and more comfortable."
